Having collaborated with Ringo Starr, Amir Khan, Coach NYC, Urban Outfitters and Gordon Ramsay amongst others, the Biscuit Factory is lucky to finally pin down Charlie Anderson!
On the 30th of June from 7pm onwards, Anderson will present selected paintings from his latest collection, “Overnight”, for one night only at the Biscuit Factory Edinburgh.
With inspiration ranging from internet pop up ads to the religious iconography of ancient civilizations, Anderson creates technical paintings on canvas with an array of techniques, recalling the layered and textured effect of outdoor advertising. Each canvas is primed, sanded and measured out with a grid before sections of text, colour and image are applied with acrylic paint using a variety of techniques such as sign writing, stencils and brushwork.
Larger works recall oversized magazine covers; pin up girls are inverted and pixelated in bubblegum colors taking on a demon like quality, whilst background text taken out of its original context recalls poetic form. The decelerating process of hand painting such transient and stylized images creates tension with the disposable nature of the source material, and suggests to the viewer a practice that pursues aesthetics on its own terms.
