What is the role of painting today? How have new media such as the digital, photographic, filmic and internet-based art influenced painters? After Douglas Crimp declared the death of painting in 1981, the medium has been regularly reinvented. In this course students will look at some new approaches to painting. Works by contemporary painters such as Peter Doig, Gerhard Richter, Lucy Mackenzie and Luc Tuymans among others will be considered alongside historical painters such as Velazquez, Cezanne, Zurbaran and Goya. Students will learn how to use a range of painting materials traditional and new – oil and acrylic paint, oil bars, and charcoal, working on preparatory studies and final works, including five new paintings in a variety of media. They will also learn how recent shifts in art philosophy have influenced the way artists approach painting today.
