Inspired by her late grandfather, a renowned entomologist, Ashwini Ramaswamy explores the enigma of night — which conceals and liberates, frightens and absolves. Ramaswamy creates a vision of a mysterious moonlit realm inhabited by fluttering insects and birds, tigers searching for deer in the shadows, shimmering fish that leap in and out of inky waters — from evening to the deepest hours of night to early morning, nocturnal creatures and settings that are dormant by day are free to roam and flourish only after sundown. She draws from the writings of Rabindranath Tagore, Jorge Luis Borges, the Tamil Sangam poets and the Vedas (sacred texts) to «import magic realism, a technique often used in literature, into the dance world» (Minneapolis Star Tribune).
