At a time when it could not be more relevant, we are thrilled to welcome Annie Miller for a discussion of of her eagerly awaited new book: A Basic Income Handbook.
In this brilliantly informed and accessible work, Miller examines the failings of our current socio-economic system and why it needs to change. Proposing a society with a basic income, Miller outlines the internal workings of such a system, who would be eligible for basic income and what would happen to the rest of the welfare system, amongst other crucial questions.
Miller closes with an exploration of how to achieve a society with a basic income, giving examples of pilot schemes elsewhere and discussing the politics behind implementation. This is a timely, scholarly contribution to the current debate on basic income and the economics of the future.
Miller lectured for over 20 years at Heriot-Watt University in the Economics Department. Throughout her time lecturing she also co-edited A Modern Guide to Economic Thought: An Introduction to Comparative Schools of Thought in Economics. She has dedicated much of her time to researching Basic Income, becoming an expert in the field, founding the Basic Income Research Group in 1984, and presenting papers on the issue at eight of the Basic Income Earth Network’s biannual congresses.
