When used with both strength and sensitivity, colour can add depth and dynamism to painting. Working from studio-based still-lives, students will explore high-key colour and how coloured light affects local colour relationships, absorbed and reflected. The course will cover colour theory, as well as examine the work of The Fauves, Matisse, Kandinsky, Rothko, and contemporary painters such as Callum Innes, allowing students to develop an deeper understanding of how colour works and how it can be used in painting, both acrylic and oil. Students will start the week playing with colour, working on colour studies and experimenting with grounds, glazes, colour building and layering. These will be built on through the week with students consolidating their ideas through to a final, resolved piece.
