As part of Edinburgh Art Festival, The Telfer Gallery 2017-2018 artist in residence Leontios Toumpouris collaborates with artist-filmmaker Maria Anastassiou to present ‘On Residual Agencies’, a choreographed screening of 16mm film, expanded cinema and performance. This program has come together out of a six month-long discourse between Toumpouris and Anastassiou, informed by the former's research into alchemical thinking and the latter's filmmaking and film-curating practice.
In Sexual alchemy the subject observes their own transformation from within their own body. What (normally) takes place in the alchemical laboratory is moved into the body itself that eventually becomes the subject, the tool and the object.
‘On Residual Agencies’ brings together works that negotiate the alchemical qualities intrinsic within moving image materials: celluloid film, digital video, sound, time, live performance. The body and the apparatus are employed, represented, fragmented and suggested to explore the distribution of agency in filmic practices. The artists apply a range of strategies to subvert the mode of production and affect the viewing experience. Processes range from the automatic: digital time-lapse and sound-trap applications, to consciousness-altering: self-hypnosis and naturally derived psychedelia; to camera-less: 16mm filmmaking directly with the sea and a live expanded cinema performance involving much lipstick…
