7 July 2017 the United Nations adopted a treaty to ban nuclear weapons! This treaty has been signed by 124 states so far, yet Theresa May still insists she would press the button to launch Britain’s nuclear weapons of mass destruction, causing indiscriminate and irreversible harm to thousands of humans and the natural environment, both present and future.
Despite consistent Scottish opposition to nuclear deterrence policies, Britain’s nuclear weapons bases remain on Scottish soil only. The new treaty provides Scotland with a unique opportunity to engage a nuclear armed state in serious debate about deterrence policy.
This workshop aims to facilitate that discussion amongst ourselves as well. We will discuss topics such as the pros and cons of deterrence policy, the impact of the presence of nuclear weapons in Scotland, the impact of the recent nuclear weapons ban treaty, as well as providing an opportunity to discuss any other questions you might have with regard to nuclear weapons! Whether you are for or against nuclear weapons, please come along and we look forward to hear your thoughts and swap around ideas!
