Join us for the first in a new regular fixture in our events programme that we are really excited about at Golden Hare Books! Whether you are a short story aficionado already, have always wanted to read more stories or just like being read to, this club is for you!
Led by one of our booksellers, you’ll be offered a glass of wine, then sit back and relax as we read a short story out loud to the audience. Then we’ll discuss the story a bit, and then we can all go home to ponder what we’ve just read.
For our first club, we could think of no finer story to start with than Shirley Jackson’s iconic masterpiece of atmosphere, “The Lottery”. Many of you will be familiar with the story, but if not then hearing it read aloud will be a real treat! Here’s a taster
“Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company office. Bill Hutchinson held it up, and there was a stir in the crowd. “All right, folks,” Mr. Summers said. “Let’s finish quickly.”
It’s a doozy. We’ll also have copies of Jackson’s books on sale should you wish to go straight home and devour more of her literary wisdom.
Like the sound of the club? There are no tickets needed, just turn up at the stated time – it’s completely free, and you’ll get 10% off the chosen short story collection that evening! We hope to see you there…
