Join us for the Edinburgh launch of an incredible debut novel, and enter the strange, teetering world of the Insomnia Museum…

Anna lives in a flat with Dad. He is a hoarder, and together they have spent the last 12 years constructing the Insomnia Museum, a labyrinth built from dead TVs, old cuckoo clocks, stacks of newspaper and other junk Dad has found.

Anna is 17. She can’t remember ever having seen the outside, but noises come from that other world: dogs bark in the walls, music plays in the floor, and a ship sails through the canyons between the tower blocks. Then one day Dad falls asleep and won’t wake up, and Anna must leave the Museum and try to survive in a place that turns out to be stranger and more dangerous than she could have imagined.

The Insomnia Museum is a modern day reworking of The Tempest, set on an unnamed council estate. It is a dazzlingly original debut, in which the author has created a world that is terrible, magical and richly imagined.

Laurie Canciani was born in 1987 and grew up in Bridgend, a small town at the geographical heart of South Wales. Laurie was kicked out of school age 16, after which she battled with a brief but crippling bout of agoraphobia. She rediscovered her love of writing in her early twenties, and went on to study English and Creative Writing at Newport University. She earned an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University in 2013, and moved back to Bridgend later that year, where she currently works in a shop.
