The Art of Surrender : Motherhood and Moving Image

23 Cockburn Street, EH1 1BP Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The act of surrender has long been steeped in last-gasp machismo in a culture where giving-in is often seen as 'giving up' yet as mothers, acts of surrender are expected and often necessary. Women are taught to surrender from the moment of conception and in birth and motherhood, the magnificent power of surrender holds both strength and vulnerability.

Mothers often surrender so much; to the needs or desires of our children, to the changes of our maternal bodies, our postpartum mental health, our economic value, and creative freedom. We let go of a certain amount of our individual identity in order to make room for this all encompassing and shared role of «mother».

In this collection of moving image works we see both loss and gain, holding on and letting go through the lens of the mother/child relationship, maternal identity conflicts, monotonous daily routines, the maternal body and the overarching delicate balance between art and motherhood.
